green smoothie that actually keeps me full
Been making this most mornings this week and honestly it's become a bit of a habit. Takes maybe five minutes and I'm not hungry until well past eleven which, for me, is the real test.
What goes in:
- 1 large handful of spinach
- ½ frozen banana (I keep a bag of sliced ones in the freezer, dead useful)
- 1 tbsp almond butter
- 200ml oat milk
- 1 scoop of collagen powder — I've been adding this for a while now, I notice it on my nails more than anything
- small handful of frozen mango chunks
- tiny pinch of ground ginger
Blend until smooth. That's basically it.
Nutritionally speaking, this comes in around 280–310 kcal depending on your almond butter. You're getting a decent amount of protein from the collagen and almond butter combined, healthy fats to slow digestion (which is why it actually keeps you full — it's not magic, it's just fat and fibre doing their job), and the spinach adds iron and folate without you tasting it at all. The frozen mango and banana give enough natural sweetness that you don't need anything added.
You can swap the almond butter for peanut butter, or use a plant-based protein powder instead of collagen if that works better for you. Oat milk is my preference here because it blends creamier but any milk does the job.
Mind you, I did put in too much ginger once and it was genuinely unpleasant so start small with that one.
