the 10 minutes nobody wants to do
Right so I've been doing a lot of thinking about why my legs feel genuinely awful for the first 20 minutes of any run and I reckon it's because my warm-up is basically nonexistent. Like I'll do a couple of leg swings in the car park and call it done.
Started actually timing myself last week. Forced myself to do a proper 10 minutes before heading up onto the fell — hip mobility, some slow marching with high knees, a bit of lateral stuff for the glutes, nothing fancy. And honestly the difference on the first climb was noticeable. Not like night and day but I wasn't shuffling around like something was wrong with me for the first kilometre. The annoying thing is I know this. I've known it for years. I just always feel like the warm-up is eating into my run and it isn't, it really isn't — 10 minutes is nothing when you're out for two hours. I think I just needed to feel the difference properly to actually bother.
